Racing with smoke

Driven to overheated exertion,
in a race with smoke beings consumed, burning.
No other contestant can be discerned through
the spirits in the trailing fog.

Come, screeching to a halt in the mercenary race,
victim only of self-frenzied aggrandize-ment.
The contest is won in the living,
and lost in the spirits of the smoke.
